Understanding the Social Security Fund; Venezuelan government and opposition sign agreement | World | Deshabhimani

Mexico City
Agreement on access to international funding stalled for Venezuela in sectors such as health, food and education.
The agreement was signed in the Mexican Foreign Ministry between representatives of President Nicolás Maduro and representatives of the opposition. The deal was brokered by Norway. The agreement is to provide social security funds in line with UN standards.

The United States imposed economic sanctions against Venezuela during the presidency of Donald Trump. The United States also backed self-proclaimed president Juan Guaidó. The current agreement aims to make available to the Venezuelan people social security funds that had been frozen as part of the embargo imposed by the United States following Maduro’s rise to power. The Maduro government has resumed stalled talks with Juan Guaidó’s faction in the interest of the people’s social security. It has also been reported that the US government has given permission to the US oil company Chevron to pump oil from Venezuela.
