NEW YORK (AP) – Two NYPD officers and a bystander rescued a man who fell onto the tracks at a Manhattan subway station, knocking him out of the way of an oncoming train. The daring rescue was captured on the body camera of one of the police officers.
The rescue took place around 4:00 p.m. Thursday at the 116th Street station in East Harlem. The man, who according to police fell accidentally, was taken to hospital with injuries to his hand and back.
Police officers Brunel Victor and Taufique Bokth were at the station when they saw shocked and screaming people from the opposite side of the station, police said.
They ran up and down stairs, as well as going through an emergency exit to reach the platforms, where a passerby was already trying to help, police said. The three managed to bring the man to safety in the track area.
Subsequently, several passers-by helped the officers get back onto the platform, just before a train arrived at the station.
“What we do every day is to help people. We don’t care if we have to risk it. That’s why we do it, that’s why we take this job,” Victor told WATV.
Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell praised the officers in a tweet that read, “Police heroism always amazes me… courage is second nature. Let’s all congratulate these amazing cops!”
