Comptroller warns that more than 4 million Covid-19 vaccines will expire by the end of the year

The Comptroller General has warned that there are more than 4 million 440 thousand doses of vaccines against Covid-19, coming from the Moderna and Astrazeneca laboratories, which risk expiring between November and December of this year if they are not inoculated in time. ; situation that could cause economic damage to the State.

According to the office guidance report No. 055-2022-OCI/5991/SOO, as of September 30, 2022, the National Center for the Procurement of Strategic Health Resources (Cenares), located in the Jesús María district, had 4 million 143 thousand doses from the Moderna laboratory in its warehouse which will begin to expire between November and December 13; while the 297 thousand doses of the Astrazeneca laboratory could expire between 20 and 27 December if they are not inoculated promptly.

It should be noted that these figures do not include 2,400,000 doses of the Astrazeneca vaccine, which the Peruvian government donated to the Ecuadorian Ministry of Health last September, with a deadline of 2022.

This donation is made at a time when there is a downward trend in the vaccination rate and there is a significant number of Peruvian citizens, especially children between zero and twelve years old, who have not completed their vaccination program against Covid -19.

According to official data from the Ministry of Health (Minsa), published in REUNIS, as of November 20, 2022, the first dose was applied to 93.90% of the target adult population, with the second dose covering 90.14%. third dose, at 73.33%, and with the fourth dose, at 22.84%. In the case of the pediatric vaccine, 48.71% of the target pediatric population received the first dose, 38.72% received a second dose and only 13.70% completed the third dose.

Given the risk that a fifth wave of infections will begin in the fortnight of December, as foreseen by the Minsa, the Controller General invites citizens to go to the vaccination centers against Covid-19, to complete their immunization scheme.

Nonetheless, the Supreme Supervisory Body has communicated the results of the Supervisory Service no. 055-2022-OCI/5991/SOO in order to present the corrective and preventive measures it will adopt to avoid the expiry of the vaccines against Covid-19.
