YEREVAN – The Kremlin reclaims its offensive success in Ukraine due to the attack Russia left the post-Soviet country’s energy system in tatters.

“The future and success of the special operation is beyond doubt,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on a visit to Armenia, using the official Moscow term to describe the Russian invasion.

Peskov, who accompanied President Vladimir Putin to the Armenian capital Yerevan, did not provide further details.

He spoke to reporters as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was scheduled to speak at a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday and after the European Parliament declared Russia a state sponsor of terrorism.

Peskov, as mentioned AFP extensionon Thursday (11/24/2022), he did not discuss the symbolic political steps of European lawmakers.

But Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova earlier in the day said on messaging app Telegram: “I propose to name the European Parliament as a sponsor of stupidity.”

On Wednesday, some 65 Russian missiles rained down on residential buildings and power stations in various Ukrainian cities in one day.

In an operational update, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said the Kyiv Defense Forces shot down 51 of the 65 Kh-101 cruise missiles fired at the capital, as well as Vinnytsia, Lviv and Zaporizhzhia regions.

“During the day, the Russian occupiers carried out a massive attack against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure,” the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said.

The attack, which cut power to Kiev and other areas, was one of the most disturbing attacks Ukraine has experienced in recent weeks.

Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy head of Ukraine’s presidential office, has confirmed attacks on critical infrastructure in several regions.

Energoatom, Ukraine’s national nuclear company, said the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, went into “total blackout mode” during Russian bombing.
