JawaPos.com-Keeping your blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood fat levels in check will go a long way in reducing the risk of complications for people with diabetes.
“This means that when he goes for a consultation, the patient will know how to take care of himself. Starting with information on food menus, superfoods, vitamins and fiber to help manage a healthier lifestyle for diabetes,” said Michael Candiago, CEO and founder of mGanik, a health supplement company .
Also, by consulting with a doctor, we can find out about efforts in managing diabetes complications, Candiago said in a news release Thursday.
Meanwhile, Dr. Caesar Lagalinggo Givani, Sp.PD explained that in addition to conducting consultations, patients must take action to properly prevent and delay diabetes complications, such as making healthier food choices.
“Three things must be considered for a diabetes diet, namely measure the amount of calories entering our body, so that it is a maximum of 1500 kcal/day,” he said.
Caesar advises diabetics to prioritize foods that are low in cholesterol, high in fiber, and low on the glycemic index (GI), and whenever possible, avoid foods that are high in sugar and carbohydrates.
“Make sure you have three meals a day and three low-GI snacks, like fruits and vegetables, to avoid blood sugar spikes,” she explained.
In addition to managing a healthy diet, diabetic patients need to manage their diabetes such as maintaining HbA1c according to the target to reduce the risk of complications, such as not smoking and increasing physical activity with sports.
Some recommended exercise tips for people with diabetes are that you can start with jogging, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor cycling and even swimming. The purpose of this physical activity is to help sufferers lower blood glucose levels, and even increase insulin sensitivity, in order to delay the onset of complications, Caesar explained.
Complications of diabetes are conditions in which parts of our body get damaged, such as the feet and eyes, due to high blood sugar levels.
Also in 2021, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) notes that Indonesia is included in the category of top 5 countries for diabetes with an age range of 20 to 79 years.
Within that group, the number of diabetics in Indonesia reached 19.5 million people, an increase from 2011 which was only 7.3 million people. Seeing this, people with diabetes need to have regular checkups and effective lifestyle management, as well as medication if needed.
