The government denounces the loss of 400,000 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 due to expiry – Presidency of the Republic of Costa Rica

The government of the Republic announces that, according to estimates by the Costa Rican Social Security Fund, approximately 400,000 adult doses and 11,857 pediatric doses of the vaccine against COVID-19 will expire by the end of November.

Both the Costa Rican Social Security Fund and the Ministry of Health have tried to prevent the loss of vaccines due to expiration through a variety of activities such as extending office hours, house-to-house visits, school visits, communications, and public-private partnerships.

The CCSS data reflect that among the doses available in storage and already distributed on the net, in addition to those that can be entered in these weeks, the number of doses that could expire is close to 400,000 in the most probable scenario.

The Fund authorities invite the population who wish to be vaccinated to attend the authorized vaccination clinics throughout the national territory and to obtain their dose against the covid, whether it is the first, second, third or fourth, as appropriate .

The Government of the Republic deplores this great loss of resources. We will make efforts to avoid future losses within the framework of the quantities purchased and the terms of the confidential contracts for the purchase of vaccines signed during the administration of Alvarado Quesada.
