In the fifth generation, the Toyota Prius is still a five-door liftback, but now the rear door handles are integrated into the rear window frame, similar to other Japanese cars. On the other hand, the line of the bonnet and roof has lengthened, giving the car a sportier silhouette.
The interior has a digital instrument cluster and a huge screen for the multimedia system, while there is a separate screen for climate control. The gearbox control lever is now located in the central tunnel instead of on the front panel as before.
The plug-in hybrid “Toyota Prius PHEV” is almost twice as powerful as the previous generation: its hybrid power unit develops 223 horsepower (instead of the previous 122 hp). This was achieved by combining a 148hp two-litre petrol engine with a 160hp electric motor, which also directs drive to the front wheels.
As a result, the performance of the “Prius” is significantly improved: it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, but with a full charge of the 13.6 kWh battery it can travel up to 60 km in 100% electric mode , which is 50 percent more than its predecessor.
We remind you that “Toyota Prius” was the first globally available serial hybrid, debuting in 1997 – since then, more than five million Prius units have been sold worldwide. According to calculations by the automaker itself, it has made it possible to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 82 million tonnes compared to a car with an internal combustion engine of the same size.
