Since New York is the most famous and populous American city, why isn’t it the capital of the USA today? Here is the answer.
New York was twice the capital of the United States
- New York City is a special city in the United States. New York is first of all the most populous city in the United States, with more than 8.3 million inhabitants. New York is too the most touristic city in the country and the global heart of finance, with the essential stock exchange Wall Street. Without forgetting the incomparable place of New York on a cultural level, both in terms of cinemamusic, museums and the arts in general. Yet, New York City is not the capital of the United States. This role belongs to Washington, which has only 700,000 inhabitants…
- To understand this one must go back to the end of the 18th century and to American independence. The first American Congress met in 1774 in Philadelphia and the city then became the first capital of the young United States of America. The period is particularly difficult. The United States of America proclaimed its independence on July 4, 1776, but the war of independence against the British troops raged on until 1783. The British were finally defeated and the peace treaty was signed in Paris on confirming the victory of the Americans.
- The principle then was simple: from 1774 to 1790 the capital changed city according to the place chosen for the meetings of the United States Congress. Thus Baltimore, Princeton, Annapolis and Philadelphia alternate in boasting the title of capital of the USA. New York also became the capital from 1785 to 1788 and then from 1789 to 1790. But it would not last…
New York loses title as capital…
- On July 16, 1790, the representatives of the 13 states that make up the United States of America met to define the functioning of the young federation of states. The question of the federal capital quickly comes to the table. Several states want to host the capital, starting with Philadelphia, the very first capital.
- Above all, each state wants to defend its interests: Northern states want to keep power while Southern states want the capital to be in a state conducive to slavery. Northerner Alexander Hamilton and Southerner Thomas Jefferson Explain Their Arguments!
- To avoid tensions between states and find a compromise, the representatives decide to form a federal territory, the District of Columbia. The American constitution provides that this territory is not part of the federation and assumes the role of the capital of the United States, hosting the seat of the United States government. The new federal city takes the name of Washington, in homage to George Washington, the first President of the United States. New York loses the title!
