OAIL ITERA successfully organizes a nationwide astronomy competition

This activity featured three judges, namely SAP ITERA Study Program Lecturer and OAIL Researcher Hendra Agus Prastyo, M.Si. and Ridlo W. Wibowo, M. Si., as well as a lecturer in the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) Astronomy Study Program, Dr. Hakim L. Malasan, M.Sc.

In his remarks, Alfiah said the activity involved students made up of 46 school teams from various regions in Indonesia. The students of the SD, SMP and SMA equivalent categories took part in the activity. This activity, involving the wider community, is organized as a forum for competition to sharpen students’ thinking skills and their dexterity in answering questions quickly, accurately and carefully, as well as fostering a sense of sportsmanship among the teams.

Prior to the final round, this competition took place in 3 stages that the participants had to go through starting with the online preliminary round on November 5, 2022 to determine the top 15 teams that would compete directly in the semi-finals and the final on November 19, 2022 at ITERA. 2022 will be the first year that the LCC will be held face-to-face after the end of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I am very pleased with the participants who enthusiastically took part in the competition. Even though there is no astronomy class at school, the younger siblings are still excited to learn astronomy independently to take part in this event,” he said. stated Dr. Hakim L. Malasan, M.Sc., in his speech.

Materials tested in the competition included basic mathematics, positional astronomy, instrumentation in astronomy, stellar physics and evolution, the solar system, exoplanets, the Milky Way, extra galaxies, right up to cosmology.

In this activity, 1st and 2nd place in SMA category were won by a team from SMA Al Kautsar, Bandar Lampung, while 3rd place was won by SMA Kharisma Bangsa. For the SMP category, the first winner was Penabur Kota Modern Middle School team, the second winner was SMPIT Assyifa Boarding School Wanareja and the third winner was TMI Roudlatul Qur’an Metro Middle School. Meanwhile, SDIT Permata Bunda team won 1st place in SDIT category, 2nd place went to SDIT Baitul Jannah and 3rd place went to SDIT Permata Bunda.

Winners in each category 1st place receive Meade-50AZ telescope, plaque, medal, certificate and coaching money, 2nd place receive f70060 telescope, plaque, medal, certificate and coaching money, and 3rd place receive binoculars, plaque, medal, certificates and money for coaching. Not only that, participants also had the opportunity to observe the sun using the Barride telescope and visit the OZT-ALTS telescope between competitions and stargaze with the OAIL and ITERA Robotic Telescope (IRT) teams in roof ITERA C building at night after the race.

Supervisor of Nuris Jember High School, East Java, Hairlinda Arini Agustin, S.Pd., appreciated the astronomy competition activities organized by OAIL. According to Hairlinda, by participating in these activities the students gained a lot of new knowledge which was very useful. “We hope that next year the LCC can be held again and we hope that we can participate again,” said Arini.
