The death toll from a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in West Java, Indonesia is spiraling.

<리드완 카밀 / 서자바주 주지사> “This earthquake killed 162 people and injured 326 people. Most of them were injured or fractured by falling objects or debris. 13,784 people were also displaced.”

The death toll is likely to rise as search operations continue.

<치안주르주 주민> “I was sleeping when the earthquake happened. My bed suddenly rocked and I ran out of the house and houses were collapsing.”

More than 2,000 homes were damaged in Qianzur alone, the epicenter, and there are reports of building damage, power outages and communication problems in nearby areas.

In particular, 25 aftershocks were recorded in the two hours following the earthquake, and the aftershocks continue.

The earthquake also caused the shaking of some buildings and the evacuation of people in Jakarta, the capital, which is about 70 km from Qianjur.

<누럴 히다야 / 자카르타 시민> “I was writing a report in the office as usual. The building shook and I felt a strong vibration, as if someone was pushing me.”

The Korean embassy in Indonesia said it has been confirmed that there are no casualties of Korean residents due to the earthquake.

Indonesia is located on the so-called ‘Ring of Fire’, the circum-Pacific seismic belt, so earthquakes occur frequently.

In 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake triggered a huge tsunami, killing 220,000 people.
