This former Fortuna manager is the “worst” Bundesliga manager of all time
Dusseldorf In the top German division, the post of head coach is a real ejection seat. According to “Statista”, the average half-life in the Bundesliga over the last 20 seasons was 679.4 days. A former Fortuna coach is the leader with his points average.
Norbert Meier is one of these sons of the Bundesliga. That’s what the guys were once called who somehow always existed and found their place everywhere. Meier was a player for SV Werder Bremen and Borussia Mönchengladbach. As a coach, he was once attracted by the whole republic. And somehow he’s always made history in very different ways.
On St. Nicholas Day 2005, Norbert Meier, then manager of MSV Duisburg, wrote a special chapter in the big book of Bundesliga anecdotes in the match against 1.FC Köln (1-1) with a header against Albert Streit.
The trigger was a harmless duel between the Cologne player and Duisburg’s Razundara Tjikuzu a few minutes before the final whistle. Meier clamored aside, which a dispute like a hothead did not accept without objection. The pro walked up to Meier, their faces came dangerously close, and head-to-head contact eventually ensued. One after the other, the two opponents fell, first Meier and moments later a fight.
Meier wouldn’t be Meier if he didn’t shake his head more at the story, at a distance. Because the television pictures proved beyond doubt: Meier himself hit his head, while Streit remained completely passive, the next fall was pure theatrics of the coach. With some distance, Meier finally saw it quite objectively: “An absolutely ridiculous story which I made even more ridiculous. I was shocked at myself at the time.”
However, he is expected to fully rehabilitate from this issue in subsequent years. His time in Fortuna was also largely responsible for this. There he became a cult coach. From 2008 to 2013 he was employed in the state capital. He led the club from the third division up to the Bundesliga.
His performance of a sporting nature on the big stage was generally within narrow limits. In the list of the worst Bundesliga managers of all time, he is in first place. In an interview with our editorial team, he says: “I don’t really care. The teams I’ve coached in the Bundesliga have always been perfect. I don’t think you can measure everything just with an average of points.”
And our columnist from “Senf drupp” continues: “With Fortuna Düsseldorf, for example, we have only been in the relegation zone once in the whole season, unfortunately on the last match day. You always have to put such statistics into perspective. The worst points average only applies to the Bundesliga; below it looks very different. I want to take it with the necessary humor: I’ve always been used to being at the top in my life, whether you look down on it or turn everything upside down and look down “.
