Horizon Europe funding for the GlycanTrigger project

The aim of the GlycanTrigger project is to study the transition from health to chronic inflammation in patients with Crohn’s disease. To better understand this phenomenon, the European project will receive a total of 7 million euros, of which nearly 900,000 euros are earmarked for the LUMC.

This substantial contribution from the European Union will be used to identify a so-called checkpoint that characterizes the passage from a healthy situation to chronic inflammation. With this new checkpoint, the researchers hope they can finally predict the course of Crohn’s disease and prevent chronic inflammation. Among other things, they examine how changes in intestinal mucosal glycosylation act as an important driver for local and systemic mechanism dysregulation, which in turn can lead to chronic inflammation.

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Manfred Wuhrer, the Center for Proteomics and Metabolomics and the Department of Pathology of the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) will contribute to this project. Using in-depth cellular and molecular phenotyping of immune cells, they will provide more insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying Crohn’s disease.
