Sparkasse St. Wendel warns against fraudsters at ATMs

ATMs are currently being targeted by scammers again. They try to get the bank customers’ money with the help of various methods. The Kreissparkasse St. Wendel warns in particular about so-called “side surfers” and provides information on how best to protect yourself against them.

Shoulder Surfer, what is it actually?

Shoulder surfers are criminals who look over their shoulders to spy on personal data such as credit or debit card PINs (Personal Identification Numbers, PINs) or online account passwords in order to get their victims’ money or otherwise deceive them. After spying on the PIN, the perpetrators cleverly distract their victims to steal their debit or credit card. This is then exchanged directly for a counterfeit card so that the theft is not noticed immediately. Or the perpetrators trick the victim into believing that the card has been confiscated from the machine. With the stolen PIN plus credit card, piggyback surfers can now easily loot the accounts of those affected.

These measures will protect you from shoulder surfing

  • When entering your PIN and password, always make sure that no one can see you.
  • If necessary, cover the keyboard with your hand or an object.
  • Keep an eye on your bank cards.
  • Make sure you keep a safe distance from other people.
  • Ask people (presumably) asking for help to wait until you’re done and to keep your distance until then.
  • Monitor ATMs: Manipulations, such as attachments mounted to read magnetic stripes or spy on card data, are not unusual. If you notice anything unusual, avoid these ATMs and notify bank employees or call the police.
  • If you suspect card misuse, have your card blocked immediately. Nationwide blocking emergency call: 116 116* (from abroad with the German dialing code +49).
  • If you are unsure, ask your local bank for advice. It even blocks your cards for you.
  • Check the cash withdrawal limit of your account. The higher the limit, the greater the damage from criminal attacks. Adjust the height if necessary.

In any case, don’t be afraid to call the police!
