ANNOUNCEMENTS•
Not only less flying, driving and meat, but also less fossil subsidies, polluting industry, floriculture, fertilizers and unbridled world trade. These are the “climate taboos” that the opposition party Party for the Animals wants to eliminate as soon as possible.
And this is possible, as deputy party leader Christine Teunissen made clear in her speech at the party congress in Den Bosch. “If we were to break these taboos, it would by no means be impossible to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.” Teunissen substitute temporary party leader Esther Ouwehand who is at home due to overload.
Check
The party with six seats in the House of Representatives doubled in size in March in municipal elections and now governs four municipalities: Arnhem, Almere, Amersfoort and Groningen. Also in the latest political barometer is the Party for the Animals with 9 seats Good front. Teunissen hopes to continue the growth in the upcoming provincial council elections in four months.
But it is not yet clear whether the party also wants to participate in the provincial government in the event of an electoral victory. Then they will be able to make their mark on the reduction of nitrogen emissions, one of the most important political issues of the moment.
Spotlights
Teunissen made it clear in his speech that he has little sympathy for the approach of traditional parties, which tackle problems “step by step”. This leads to delays and, according to her, there is no time for this. “It is the activists, who day after day turn the spotlight on the climate crisis, giving us another chance to reverse the trend”. The party will also enter talks with environmental activist Extinction Rebellion, the congress was announced.
The party wants to reduce the number of cows, pigs and chickens as quickly as possible. “We want more animals, but more butterflies, bees, benthic animals, birds, fish and frogs in the ditch.”
In her speech, Teunissen railed against the Boer Burger Movement (BBB), which she says sows doubt. “A party that denies that the huge amount of nitrogen that comes from Dutch agriculture is bad for nature.” The temporary chairman of the party says that BBB is supported by “Big Agro”, which are larger agricultural and horticultural organizations. “BBB is a danger to animals, nature and the environment.” says Teunissen.
The BBB is expected to make a hefty profit in the provincial elections. But it seems out of the question for the Party for the Animals to join forces with the BBB. In his speech, Teunissen calls the BBB a party of “nitrogen deniers, subsidy tractors and poison sprayers. The party that accounts for 600 million deaths in slaughterhouses every year.”
