Eurasia’s tallest volcano is spewing…

An earthquake measuring 5.7 occurred overnight off the east coast of Kamchatka, and then a flare appeared in the crater of the Klyuchevskaya volcano, reports bTV.

Ejections of hot magma have been recorded with a frequency of up to 10 explosions per hour, lava flows are expected, reports the press service of the Institute of Volcanology of the Far Eastern branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“In Kamchatka, the eruption of the peak of the highest volcano in Eurasia, Klyuchevskoi, has begun. There are single discharges of volcanic bombs with a frequency of up to 10 explosions per hour. Scientists expect lava flows and mud flows that they will pass along the riverbeds in the region of the volcano,” the announcement reads.

The eruption started from the top of the crater. Due to the considerable depth of the volcano – about 200 meters, only individual ejecta are visible above the rim. Scientists warn that the intensity of the eruption will increase.

According to Alexei Ozerov, director of the institute, eruptions of Klyuchevskoi volcano can last from several weeks to a year.

Klyuchevskoi volcano, whose height is 4800 meters, is the highest active volcano in Eurasia. Its age is estimated at 7,000 years.

The last summit eruption was in early October 2020 and lasted until February 8, 2021.
