The ice rink was opened this morning in Winterswijk. From 8.15 the skaters could go down on the ice. “We have never been open so early,” says the Winterswijk Ice Cream Association (WIJV).
This evening it became -7 degrees in Winterswijk. After much effort on the part of the association, there is 1cm of ice on the rink. That’s enough for a few hundred skaters, says ice master Hendrik van Prooije.
Yesterday and tonight many volunteers worked hard. “It started yesterday with clearing the trail of leaves. Then all the stuff had to be brought to the trail and everything had to be started. And then the volunteers sprayed all night.”
Skaters who want to be there shouldn’t wait too long, says Van Prooije. “If we’re open until 11, we’re very happy about it.” The temperature is expected to rise above freezing in Winterswijk by that time. The ice master is proud that it’s possible to skate for a few hours so early in the year: “We’ve never been open so early.”
