Netizens question Ice Cream Cafe’s halalness, says owner

Jakarta

This ice cream parlor in Singapore attracts the attention of many people including Muslim guests. Unfortunately, its halal status is still questionable. The owner also gave this answer.

There are many nice and interesting cafes in Singapore that you shouldn’t miss. However, not all food and drink menus in the cafe are guaranteed to be halal.

Even if it does not contain pork or haram meat, some of the food is often lard or lard added.

Also, there are not many cafes in Singapore that include certification halal. As a form of vigilance, eventually, quite a few from the Muslim community and travelers carried out more thorough checks to ensure that the food ingredients sold were truly halal.

Like this ice cream parlor in Singapore, which has recently received a lot of questions from the general public about its halal status. On the occasion of the launch of Asia One (17/11), an ice cream shop called Heartbreak Melts located in Ang Mo Kio is very popular indeed.

They offer a wide variety of ice cream flavors made from vegan ingredients. Not just ice cream, they also have a menu of various types of processed desserts, from waffles to cakes.

With these interesting menus, it’s no wonder that many people are curious to try ice cream. Unfortunately they have not pocketed the halal certification. This therefore raises many questions from the Muslim community.

There seem to be many Muslim nationals who really want to try this ice cream but are hesitant. To the extent that, co-owner Goh Yong Wei also chimed in by answering questions from customers on the café’s TikTok.

Goh Yong Wei reveals why his ice cream shop hasn’t been certified halal. In the video clip uploaded by TikTok account @yongwei92, the owner of the establishment claims that all the ingredients used are actually vegan. They also don’t have an alcoholic taste.

“We are not halal certified, but everything is vegan and we don’t taste like alcohol.”

Trying to answer all the netizens’ questions, this man also added information that Heartbreak Melts cafe still serves alcohol, but the drinks are separated from the ice cream display area to avoid possible cross-contamination.

So actually, all the ice cream ingredients he uses can be considered safe for consumption by Muslims. As for the issue of halal certification, he said it was just a company decision.

Because it is quite difficult to get halal certification in Singapore. It takes a lot of processes and costs that have to be borne by the culinary businessmen.

Yong Wei continued, “For a small bar like us to get halal certified in one year, it costs $1,219 or about Rp. 13 million.”

As they look to apply for Halal certification in the future, this is something that is out of their budget for now.

To clarify everything, Yong Wei again explained with a slight touch on the definition of the term ‘halal‘. If you follow the terms according to the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, any food or drink included in the halal category is permitted for consumption by Muslims.

Yong Wei also gave some simple examples that netizens seem to understand quite well. The video was also animated by netizens who were impressed with knowledge of him.

Like this netizen who commented, “This sister knows halal and haram better than us.”

While others also said, “I am very impressed that you know so much about halal and haram!! Respect for you”.
