Paris describes Roma’s attitude as ‘ugly gesture’

On Friday, the Elysée defined Italy’s position towards the Ocean Viking ship as a “ugly gesture”.

According to information from the BFMTV channel, the presidency of the French Republic denounced a “bad gesture” by Rome, which refused to welcome the ship.

As a reminder, France had finally agreed to welcome, last Friday, the Ocean Viking ship with 234 migrants on board, in the military port of Toulon (south), after Italy’s refusal.

Despite the position of its southern neighbor, France is trying to ease tensions and believes that “the important thing is to continue cooperation and not stop there”, underlines the Elysium.

European law requires migrants to be met at the port where they arrived before being deported or distributed to other European countries to help Italy cope with the influx of migrants. It is in this context that France had to welcome around 3,000 migrants who are currently in Italy.

However, last Sunday, the government spokesman, Olivier Véran, said on the same channel that “France will not keep its agreements with Italy on migrants”.

In this sense, the Elysée affirmed that “the people who landed in Toulon will be cut out of the number we welcome this year in respect of solidarity with Italy”, indicates BFMTV.

Of the 234 migrants welcomed last Friday, 44 received a deportation notice while 26 minor migrants managed to escape. According to French media, 123 migrants whose files have not yet been processed will be allowed to leave the waiting area due to a large number of files to be processed within the legal deadline.
