We regret 57 deaths on the roads of the Gard since the beginning of the year. 2022 could become the deadliest year in seven years in this department. At issue is the persistence of risky behavior behind the wheel.
While the number of physical accidents is decreasing in the department, the persistence of risky behavior favors a high mortality rate on the roads of the Gard, according to the prefecture of the Gard.
Alcohol, drugs and speeding behind the wheel fuel these behaviors that sometimes lead to fatal accidents.
Analyzing the profiles of traffic offenders highlights a feeling of lack of responsibility and/or victimisation.
The prefecture of the Gard, with press release
As evidenced by this publication by the gendarmes of Gard on their Facebook page: on November 11, the gendarmes of Gallargues checked in the afternoon a young motorist who was driving at breakneck speed on the D979, near St-Laurent d’Aigouze: 184 km per hour instead of the regulation 90 km/h!
This young Gardois ended up on foot, the gendarmes took away his driving license and his vehicle was impounded.
Sanctions, both administrative and judicial, have been levied against motorists who commit these crimes, underlines the prefecture.
To avoid reoffending and try to make sense of the sentences handed down by the courts, the Gard Prison Integration and Probation Service (SPIP) proposes the organization of community service measures or five-day road safety internships.
The purpose of these courses: to raise awareness and remember the rules of the Highway Code in a practical way.
Trainees are made aware of the reality of perception and braking times, the dangers of addictive behavior (alcohol and narcotics) or even the consequences on daily life after an accident.
Five to six courses are organized in the department every year to raise awareness of around sixty convicted prisoners.
In 2023, the system will be enhanced with nine courses offered.
