When Prince William and Kate got engaged in 2010, the hearts of many a royal fan skipped a beat when they saw him using his late mother’s engagement ring. The jewel was one of the things William and Harry wanted to keep after his death. In Diana’s documentary, her former butler Paul Burell says that after her death, her children were given the opportunity to keep special items as mementos. Burell recalls Prince William saying: “I would like her mother’s Cartier watch, the one that grandfather Spencer gave her for her 21st birthday.” Harry wished he had his engagement ring right now. “I remember holding mom’s hand when I was a kid and that ring always hurt because it was so big,” he reportedly said.

But when William planned his proposal, Harry gave the ring to his brother. “The only thing he kept from his mother, he gave to his brother. She is selfless, kind and exactly who Diana was,” Burell said. The show still stirs up a lot of emotions after all these years. “It’s a way of making sure my mother lacks for nothing,” William said.
