A Ukrainian reconquest of the Crimean peninsula is the end of Putin, according to a Swedish expert

Russia’s attack on Ukraine began as early as 2014, when Vladimir Putin and his Russia annexed the Crimea peninsula. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has previously said that the Crimea peninsula should be retaken.

If that were to happen, things would go badly for Vladimir Putin, says a Swedish Russia expert.

Difficult to see Putin “surviving”

According to Russian foreign policy and security expert Gudrun Persson, the annexation of Crimea was very popular in Russia, even in circles critical of Putin. There has been an acceptance of the action in Russian society, even in parts of the West.

– Putin got away with it. That he would have survived a loss of Crimea politically is very hard for me to see, says Russian foreign and security policy expert Gudrun Persson according to Expressen, citing Today’s news.

Should the Crimean peninsula fall back into Ukrainian hands, Persson believes Russia will be ruthless in its response. He points to further terrorist attacks as a likely reaction.

He believes a change of power is the only option

Persson believes the only way the war in Ukraine can truly end is if the Russian leadership is replaced.

– When the leader of the Kremlin changes his surname, there is always a change in one direction or another. But we don’t know who will take over. If Putin is a Lenin, there can be a Stalin. If Putin is a Stalin, then perhaps there will be a Khrushchev, Persson said according to the report The Espresso.

Emphasize that such a change can be unpredictable and can happen very quickly.
