The Council of Catholic Bishops of Cuba held its 160th General Assembly in Havana from 7 to 11 November 2022, with the participation of the Apostolic Nuncio in the country, Archbishop Gambiero Gloder.
The Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba highlighted during its General Assembly the twenty-fifth anniversary of the visit of Pope Saint John Paul II to Cuba, precisely in January of the year 1998, and indicated that it constitutes an occasion to raise thanks to God and to renew the life and mission of the people of God, within the framework of the synodal process which is taking place It includes all the dioceses, bearing in mind that the Episcopal Conference has long since begun to organize the pastoral program for the celebrations which will be held for the occasion, as stated in a statement published on the website of the Cuban Catholic Bishops’ Conference on November 14, and included the topics that were addressed during the meeting of the General Assembly.
The communiqué indicates that the Standing Committee of the Cuban Bishops’ Conference informed the participants of the work on the visit it made to the Holy See last October, where it met the Holy Father and the heads of the Vatican dicasteries. He also briefed the President and Secretary General of the Standing Committee on their meetings in Germany with the heads of organizations that support the pastoral work of the Catholic Church in Cuba. Among the topics addressed by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba during its General Assembly in Pastoral for the Family include the synodal march and the document relating to the continental phase of this march, the week of prayer for Christian unity in January and the upcoming World Youth Day in Lisbon, Portugal, in August 2023 A certain number of young Cuban Catholics are expected to participate.
