In Nieuwe Pekela a fire broke out on Wednesday evening due to an unknown cause in the construction of a house on Zuidwendingerweg. Both Nieuwe Pekela and Oude Pekela firefighters went out to put out the fire, which released a lot of smoke. Firefighters quickly switched to “medium heat,” according to a fire department spokesman, primarily to prevent the fire from spreading to the house itself. Although the plan was successful, firefighters were unable to stop two residents from breathing in the smoke. Ambulance personnel took care of them.
