Iran increasingly imposes death sentences on anti-regime protesters | Abroad

More and more protesters protesting against the strict Islamic regime in Iran are being sentenced to death. Three protesters were sentenced to death on Wednesday for their participation in the protests.

Iranian authorities began imposing death sentences on protesters last weekend. It happened for the first time on Sunday. Then a protester was sentenced to death after being found guilty of setting fire to a government building, disturbing public order, conspiring against national security and blasphemy.

Four more death sentences have followed in recent days, three of which were handed down on Wednesday. One of the death row inmates is said to have run into police officers with a car. Another suspect would have stabbed a guard with a knife and the last suspect, according to the allegations, would have attempted to block traffic and “incite terror”.

Authorities have already charged more than 1,000 people for participating in protests in the region around the capital Tehran alone. Many people have also been arrested in other regions. Hundreds of people have been killed so far.

Iran was shocked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September this year. The country’s religious police arrested her for not properly covering her head. She died at the police station, possibly as a result of police brutality.

After Amini’s death, massive protests erupted in Iran. Thousands of people took to the streets again on Tuesday to protest. They also commemorated the bloody crackdown on similar protests in 2019.
