“The victim was also drugged. My lawyer also has the documents. But now I can’t talk to him, I don’t have his number and I’m arguing with my family (…) I don’t want to go back to Romania. I would like to receive a suspended sentence and serve his sentence in Italy,” Mario Iorgulescu told Fanatik. He also said that he has never tried to talk to the victim’s family, but that he tells them that “people still make mistakes.”
“I never tried to talk to the victim’s family. But I would like to convey something to them, apologize. I want to say my condolences first. I’m really honest. But I want to tell them that people still make mistakes. I want to tell them that I wish I could come back back in time, I wouldn’t make that mistake again. I can’t go back in time, but I can make them a promise. I will take care of those children, they will want for nothing, ever, I will take care of them personally, me and my family I’ll do my best not to miss anything, I really know it’s hard for them without their father, I wish it wouldn’t happen,” Mario Iorgulescu told Fanatik.
Context
Mario Iorgulescu, son of the influential head of the Professional Football League, Mario Iorgulescu, is tried by the Bucharest court for murder. Prosecutors charge him with fatally wounding a 24-year-old man on September 7, 2019. Prosecutors say Mario Iorgulescu was driving drunk and on drugs.
Mario Iorgulescu is now in Italy, where he went for alleged medical treatment while under investigation for killing someone in a road accident.
In another case, Mario Iorgulescu was definitively sentenced in 2021 to 3 years in prison by the Bucharest court. He was convicted in the case in which he was accused, together with other defendants, of kidnapping and beating a young man who had lent them money and demanded its return. In this case, Mario Iorgulescu was arrested by prosecutors in 2016.
The accusations of the prosecutors
“On 08/09/2019, against the background of an attack of jealousy and in a state of anger, having a blood alcohol level of 1.96 g/l and being under the influence of cocaine, intending to moving from Gulia village, Tărtăşeşti Municipality, to a club in Herăstrău Park, Bucharest Municipality, defendant Iorgulescu Gino-Mario drove the Aston Martin model DBS car at a speed that far exceeded the legal limit of 60 km /h in the location.
He entered the red light at a speed of 145 km/h in the intersection between Sos. Chitilei and Teodor Neagoe str., accelerating up to 162 km/h when passing another vehicle traveling at low speed in lane I, driving the vehicle left-hand side onto a curb, depressing the pedal of the ‘throttle on a vehicle equipped with an engine developing 700 horsepower, taking the opposite direction and entering a head-on collision, at 03:02:39, at a speed of 143 km/h, with the Audi car, driven by the victim of the VDA.
She died instantly. From the moment she entered the intersection with a red light, the defendant did not apply the brake, and at the moment of impact the accelerator pedal was pressed to the maximum.
By doing so, the defendant was indifferent to the consequences of his actions, which he foresaw and accepted, endangering traffic participants, leaving the occurrence or avoidance of a collision to chance, and thus killing the victim with vicious intent.” , reads the prosecutors’ report with which Mario Iorgulescu was sent to court.
