Visual artist Rini Hurkmans will create the memorial for Peter R. de Vries in Amsterdam. His design was chosen from the ideas of five artists.
Peter R. de Vries would have turned 66 yesterday. He was shot in central Amsterdam last July and died of his injuries over a week later.
The municipality and his family want to honor him permanently. They asked five artists to make a drawing. An art committee, including members of De Vries’ family, unanimously chose Hurkmans’ design.
The 68-year-old Hurkmans was born in Deurne and lives in Amsterdam, where she teaches, among other things, at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. Rini Hurkmans makes videos, photos, sculptures and installations, among other things. In 1991 she had her first solo exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
He’s done one before memorial for Daniel van Cotthem from Vlaardingen, victim of senseless violence in 2000.
For the memorial statue that Hurkmans is about to make, more than a thousand people have passed on ideas about what ideals the monument should propagate.
The final design should be presented early next year. Hurkmans wants to join Brabant broadcasting do not anticipate what it will be like. The municipality of Amsterdam is still evaluating the exact location of the monument.
