Coach on the success of the club
Union Berlin’s successful coach Urs Fischer did not see any role model in the “iron” in view of the personnel changes in the summer transfer periods. The fifth-placed Bundesliga was promoted to the upper house in 2019, there have been over 150 transfers since then. In the fourth year in the German Oberhaus, there are only four then players compared to the first season – quite surprising for coach Fischer.
“Four players? This is madness! But it’s not a system, the high fluctuation was more like,” the Swiss explained in an interview with “11Freunde”. In the market value table, Union is in eleventh place in the Bundesliga with a squad value of €114.1m, framed by VfB Stuttgart and 1. FSV Mainz 05. Measured on these figures, the Köpenickers have always reached the optimum in the past of their possibilities. In 2021/22 the club finished fifth, a year earlier seventh.
“It’s been an advantage in recent seasons to have most of the squad together at the beginning of preparation,” said Fischer. “This summer in particular, newcomers have moved into their apartments relatively quickly, which makes a big difference. I know what I’m talking about. The first three months that I stayed in a hotel in Berlin, you almost go crazy because you don’t have your own four walls to retreat to.”

Prior to this season, the capital club invested €13.5m in newcomers Jordan (26) and Jamie Leweling (21). This was offset by takings of €24.4m, mainly for the record start of Taiwo Awoniyi (24), drawn at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. In negotiations with potential reinforcements, those responsible around Coach Fischer attach great importance to the willingness to give everything. “We also tell them this when we talk to potential newcomers. In the end, not everyone will fight as well or run as well, but everyone has to be willing. And everyone has to think collectively to fit into a team,” said the 56-year-old, the longest-serving Bundesliga manager after Freiburg’s Christian Streich.
