The Russo-Ukrainian war has been going on for almost nine months since February and the international community continues to pay close attention to relevant developments. Many Europeans choose to hang the Ukrainian flag on their doors to express their solidarity and oppose Russia’s aggression . However, some Chinese students hang up their “five-star flag” and neighbors leave a note saying “You’re welcome, but the Chinese flag is not welcome here.”
A Chinese netizen asked a question about Zhihu with the topic “What makes your good impression of the UK immediately shattered?” A family member named “Qing Jin” replied that she was studying in Edinburgh, Scotland and saw other people’s doors hanging. the ukrainian flag on a whim, so i bought a five star flag and hung it out the window.
A few days later, a neighbor posted a note on the door of his house, writing: “Residents of the second floor, your Chinese flag is not welcome here. You are welcome, but the symbol of a totalitarian country is not the welcome. .” Finally, the neighbor also added “Tibet, Taiwan, Hong Kong”, which seemed to remind the international student to look at what his motherland has done.

However, he ignored it and continued to hang the five-star flag. A week later, I received another note from a neighbor, who claimed that waving the Chinese flag is a “hate crime” for Uyghur Muslims, Tibetan Buddhists and Falun Gong.

Subsequently, the Chinese student said that a neighbor told him that someone tried to climb the water pipe to knock down the five-star flag, which caused the outdoor drain pipe to break and water to leak. Then the neighbors “begged” him to take down the five-star flag because they didn’t want to mess with homeless people and drug addicts. He said he had no choice but to withdraw the national flag for everyone’s safety.
The vast majority of Chinese netizens affirmed his actions and believed that not allowing the display of the Chinese flag was a demonstration of “double standards”; however, some foreign netizens have broken through their blind spots, saying that the Chinese authorities have never condemned Russia’s aggression after the war broke out, and their position remained silent. And Yu, it’s no wonder that the flag at five stars is not popular.
