Previously, Apple’s new generation of Apple TV 4K was launched on the line, the main improvement of which is that it is equipped with a new A15 Bionic processor. To explore its performance, foreign technology media FlatpanelsHD conducted a thorough test and compared it with SONY PlayStation 4/5 game consoles.
The A15 processor in the Apple TV 4K has 4 GPU cores and 5 CPU cores, which is one fewer core on both the CPU and GPU than the A15 processor in the iPhone 13 Pro series. After the FlatpanelsHD test, it’s “about 40% more faster” than the Apple TV with the previous generation A12 processor. Apple announced that it was 50% faster when it was released, and the difference may have to do with differences in testing methods.
It is worth mentioning that the new Apple TV 4K cancels the built-in fan design, has fewer vents on the outside, and the overall size is smaller and lighter. Will this design affect performance?
In CPU benchmarks, the A15 is about 40 percent faster than the previous-generation Apple TV’s A12. In the case of the A15 without active cooling, the throttling of the A15 is actually lower than that of the A12. In the 20-minute CPU stress test, the A12 is limited to 65%, while the A15 is limited to only ‘84%. Such a score shows that the Apple TV 4K can consistently deliver the most CPU performance during long hours of heavy gaming.
Compared with Xbox One / PS4, the CPU of A15 Bionic was found to be much faster than the previous generation of game consoles such as Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The CPU performance core of A15 is faster than the CPU core of PS4, but PS4 is better on multi-core.
Apple TV 4K (2022) GPU graphics performance exceeds 1 TFlops, but because there is no GPU data or reference applications for tvOS. It cannot be compared to previous generation consoles like Xbox One.
Being a new generation, the Apple TV 4K (2022) has faster RAM and is also equipped with a very fast NVMe SSD, which is much better than the hard drive of the previous generation of consoles. Judging by the test results, Xbox One and PS4 games should be playable on Apple TV and the experience won’t be bad.
In fact, Apple TV’s performance is not bad, but the lack of game ecology made it impossible to turn Apple TV into a gaming device. Although Apple has worked hard, the lack of participation from game developers and studios has made progress very slow, or even unchanged.
