FLY – Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko has said that having an enemy to fight against is essential for NATO’s survival.

The diplomat added that the bloc’s expansion was largely motivated by the need to antagonize countries so they could adjust to the role of adversary.

“NATO is the kind of organization that cannot exist without enemies. If there are none, they will surely die,” he said on Monday (11/14/2022) as quoted by RIA Novosti news agency.

“They have declared Asia an alliance zone of interest, pushing their backcourt to China’s borders,” he said.

Grushko said the conflict in Ukraine stemmed from NATO’s intention to eventually accept Kiev as a new member, ignoring Russia’s national security concerns.

According to him, the alliance is still trying to bring Ukraine. He does not believe that the United States and its allies are acting rationally on this issue.

NATO’s leadership says it has an open-door policy, saying every country has the sovereign right to choose it as a security provider.

Its charter, however, requires all members to agree to any expansion, a fact that came to light after Turkey blocked Finland and Sweden from joining for alleged protection of suspected terrorists.
