The film “January” premiered on November 11, in the presence of many representatives of culture and the media. The audience underlines the strong sense of presence achieved by the creative team – director Viesturs Kairiš, cameraman Vojceh Staron, artist Ieva Jurjāne, costume designer Rūta Lečaite, make-up artist Ilze Trumpe, composer Juste Janulīte, etc.
“This is one of the rare films where there is no generational conflict, I didn’t want to be there, as I was. It was compelling to hear how the time of the barricades can be experienced and imagined by those who have not experienced it themselves” says the poet Ines Zander.

“It is certainly not the director’s autobiography, but the sense of time, the details of life, the textures of the environment, the breath, the rhythmic pulsation is autobiographical. A look at the moments of youth, not evaluating finely, but moving the public over time, introducing young people to it, allowing the movements of the older year to be nostalgic again to relive the old wave of feelings,” Agris Redovićs said in the publication “Kino Rakstos”.
The next screenings, during which the public will have the opportunity to meet the directors, are scheduled for November 14 at 20:00 at “Kino Bize” in Riga, November 15 at 19:00 at “Cinamon Balle” in Liepāja, November at 16:00 at Jelgava Culture House, 17 November at 19:00 “Cinamon Alfa” in Riga and 20:30 at “Splendid Palace” in Riga, as well as 20 November at 15:00 at “Kino Lora” in Sigulda and at 17:00 at the Cēsi Concert Hall.
It has already been announced that the film “January” tells the story of young cinematographers during the barricades of 1991, when they get involved in the political events taking place in Riga, trying to get closer to them and at the same time looking for their own visual language . The roles in the film are played by Kārlis Arnolds Avots, Alise Dzene (Danovska), Sandis Runge, Baiba Broka, Artūrs Skrastiņš, Lauris Dzelzītis, Imants Strads, Kaspars Dumburs, Estonian actor Juhans Ulfsaks and Lithuanian actor Aleks Kazanavičs. The film was made in the film studio “Mistrus Media”, its producers are Inese Boka-Grübe and Gints Grübe. “Janvāris” is a joint production of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.
The film has already attracted wide international interest: the world premiere took place at the Tribeca Film Festival in the United States, where the film won the award for best foreign film, several awards were also won at the Warsaw Film Festival and the Rome International Film Festival Festivals. This autumn, the film’s journey will continue in many European and Asian festivals: on the evening of November 18, the film will be screened at the Black Nights film festival in Tallinn, and in December, the premiere will take place in France, at the Les Arcs film festival, as well as in a special screening of Oscar-nominated films at the “Scandinavian House” cinema in New York.
