Back from the abyss? What did the US election show?

The US election is the biggest test since the Civil War

A test to see if the engine of the American constitutional system, the ability to transfer power peacefully and legally, remains intact. And, apparently, it turned out: a little crumpled, but still OK.

I’m still not even close to stating that it is clear that trying to win the vote by denying the election itself will never again tempt another American politician. But given the unprecedented degree to which election denial has increased during this interim period and the way some famous Trump impersonators who have made denial a key element of their campaigns have failed, we may have just dodged one of the biggest arrows of all time, never aim at the heart of American democracy.

Sure, another arrow could be pointing at us at any moment, but the entire US electoral system – in the red and blue states – has seemed to work admirably, almost ignoring the last two years of controversy, reducing it to what that they always have been. : a shameful invention of a man and of the most unscrupulous flatterers and imitators of him. Given the threat dissident Trump deniers pose to the acceptance and legitimacy of our election, this is a big deal. (and hopefully continue after the Arizona vote count).

This is very useful, as the leaders of Russia and China have manipulated their systems to gain a foothold in power beyond their predetermined terms.
