Norway will receive Europe’s cheapest electricity on Monday

The mild climate means that we need little electricity for heating in this country.

All the rain that fell last week also means that electricity generation is picking up. The production of river hydroelectric plants cannot be regulated in the same way as that of reservoirs. If there is a lot of water in the river, the river power plants get a high production. The water cannot be stored for later, but flows directly into the sea. It is very similar to wind energy, which also cannot save production for a period without wind.

A lot of water therefore means a lot of electricity production. Electricity production exceeding consumption creates a surplus that must be exported. For exports to take place, Norwegian prices must be lower than where electricity is imported. Therefore, our prices are lowered, according to Europower.

Electricity prices in Europe are significantly higher than here on Monday, above NOK 1.50 per kilowatt-hour, according to data from the Nord Pool power exchange. In Southern Norway the average price is 54 øre, while in Northern Norway it is 18.8 øre.
