Here’s how to maintain a balanced diet according to Unesa | University teachers

Campus-For someone to be healthy, a healthy lifestyle is required, one of which is paying attention to nutritional balance. According to a nutrition lecturer at Surabaya State University (Unesa), Veni Indrawati, MKes, balanced nutrition is a component of the daily food intake that is adapted to the daily needs of the body.

According to Veni, it is important to pay attention to balanced nutrition to support the body’s immune system so that it stays fit and healthy during the transition period and the transition from pandemic to endemic. Reported by the Unesa page, Veni revealed that the fulfillment of nutrition in the body is used to produce energy, build and maintain tissue, and regulate life processes. In order to be able to carry out activities actively and optimally, an adequate and balanced diet is necessary.

“If nutrition is not met in an adequate and balanced way, it will disrupt metabolic processes and lead to nutritional problems,” said Veni, who is also head of the university nutrition program at Unesa.

Conversely, if excessive nutritional intake will cause health problems such as an abnormal increase in body weight, blood pressure, blood sugar and blood lipid profile. Veni’s unclear nutritional intake can also impact nutritional deficiency problems, such as stunting in children, chronic energy deficiency (CED) in pregnant women, and anemia in adolescents.

Veni explained, the daily diet includes staple foods, side dishes, vegetables and fruit. Sources of carbohydrates can be obtained from rice, tubers, corn, sago, noodles and bread according to local wisdom. Meanwhile, side dishes can be sources of animal protein like fish, poultry and meat, as well as plant protein like tofu, tempeh, mushrooms and nuts.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are also important to meet the daily requirement of vitamins and minerals and maintain the body’s immunity, especially during the current transitional season. Additionally, fulfilling fluid intake is also vital with a minimum intake of 8 glasses or 2 liters of water per day.

This woman born in Jombang added, in order not to get confused about what a balanced meal portion is, the General Guidelines for a Balanced Diet or PUGS, called “My Plate” devised by the Ministry of Health, can be used or used as a reference for the daily food intake.

“My plate can be split in half. In half the portion, two-thirds of the portion can be filled with staple foods, and one-third of the portion is filled with animal and vegetable side dishes. While the other half, two-thirds are filled with fresh vegetables and one-third with fruit,” she explained.
