Capuozzo inspires Italy to the first historic victory over Australia

Italy recorded a historic first win over Australia after beating the Wallabies 28-27 in Florence.

Two tries from full-back Ange Capuozzo helped lift Italy to victory, although a much changed Australian side failed to save them dead when debutant Ben Donaldson’s conversion attempt went wide of the post.

It is Italy’s first victory in 19 meetings with Australia and gives them two wins from two in autumn internationals after defeating Samoa.

The defeat worries the Tour Wallabies, who are now on a back-to-back defeat after also being eliminated by a point in Paris last weekend against France.

Australia trailed 17-3 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi after Pierre Bruno and Capuozzo both landed for the Azzurri, but Tom Wright leveled one to reduce Italy’s lead to 17-8 at the break.

Fraser McReight scored four minutes after the break to close the gap further, but Capuozzo was early on for his second try after breaking through the Australian defense and landing in the right corner.

Tom Robertson soon added a third try for the Wallabies to give them a lifeline and Cadeyrn Neville crossed late in the game but Donaldson failed to convert as Italy claimed their famous victory.
