All Tesla models will soon be updated to include Zoom, though the video conferencing app won’t be accessible while driving the vehicle.
Zoom Group product manager Natasha Walia made the announcement during the Zoomtopia event a while back. This announcement comes nearly three years after Tesla first announced plans to add video conferencing capabilities to its vehicles in early 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The system uses the interior-facing camera found on current Tesla models such as the Model 3, which sits above the rearview mirror. The Verge notes that privacy concerns are likely to arise around the ability of third-party apps to access the camera.
A promotional video shared by Zoom shows that due to the camera position, Tesla owners using Zoom will not be in the center of the screen, but this feature should make users more comfortable than using their phones or laptops in the car.
Neither Zoom nor Tesla has revealed when the video conferencing app will be released, other than the confirmation released that the feature will arrive “soon” on all new Tesla models. It’s also unclear if the app will only work on WiFi or if owners who pay for a premium connectivity plan will be able to use in-car data.
Interestingly, Zoom notifies that video conferencing will be disabled while the vehicle is in motion, but owners will be able to continue using audio conferencing. [ibd/zz/timBX] various sources
