NYPD arrests suspect

Media circulating video of the attack on the historic cathedral shows the suspect throwing an object at the glass doors. After the attack on the cardinal’s residence, the man damaged the “All Saints Episcopal Church” and a building of the archdiocese of New York the following day.

The identity of the man has been known since the beginning of the month

The alleged perpetrator is accused of a total of 15 cases of vandalism in Manhattan. The man’s identity was found earlier this month, police said. “We are grateful for the hard work of the New York Police Department,” said a spokesman for the archdiocese.

Vandalism refers to what appears to be random damage or destruction of someone else’s property. The term was coined during the French Revolution by Bishop Henri Gregoire of Blois. In 1794 the cleric denounced the rampant destruction of art by radical groups of workers and craftsmen. The word comes from a Germanic tribe that invaded Rome in 455. The phrase “how the Vandals live” has become common parlance.
