What is a lunar rainbow?
A lunar rainbow occurs when light from the moon passes through water particles in the atmosphere at night, just like sunlight during the day. This “moonbow” is created when light is refracted by water particles.
This phenomenon can only be seen on days with a full moon and clear skies. But because it’s a dim light, it doesn’t have as much color or brightness as a rainbow from the sun.
Not everyone can see
The human eye usually has difficulty distinguishing the colors of the moon. Moonlight is generally less stimulating to the color receptors than human cones. The visual experience of a rainbow can vary depending on a person’s night vision and the number and responsiveness of the color-sensitive cones in the eye’s retina.
The best time to see the lunar rainbow
A rainbow is formed when the moon hits the drops of water from a waterfall. So it can only be seen on days with good water flow and full moon but not on cloudy days. This phenomenon usually occurs only on three days of the month. There is a huge influx of tourists who come to see this show right now.
During the dry season of September, October, November and early December, the moon can only be seen from certain vantage points. As December, January, February and March are the main rainy season, moon cannot be guaranteed.
June, July and August are the best time to see the lunar rainbow and it is winter with clear skies. Rainbows are at their most beautiful in the hours immediately following moonrise and before the moon reaches its zenith.
Viewpoints to see the rainbow
The waterfall flows in an east-west direction. The moon rises in the east and sets in the west. To see a rainbow, the moon must be behind the viewer. For this you need to look west during the hours after moonrise. Zambia has the best viewpoints. Rainbows can also be seen on the Zimbabwe side. There are many guided tours in the area to show and inform tourists about the waterfalls.
