Dear Petrol, excellent news for Italians: the Government’s decision

Excellent news for Italians, as far as expensive petrol is concerned. The government’s decision comes at a delicate moment, the details.

In the past, expensive fuel has hardly made itself felt as it did in 2022. A year, the one that is about to end, that is really complicated from the point of view of taxes and various increases. Every motorist and motorcyclist knows this well, with expensive fuel having undergone a truly impressive increase in costs. In Italy, to respond to such a difficult situation from an economic point of view, the cut in excise duties has been extended.

A way to limit the expenditure of citizens; especially for the many who use a motor vehicle to go to work, perhaps with a family to feed and many bills to settle. We are not talking about a one-of-a-kind discount, but certainly capable of alleviating – albeit minimally – the expense related to fuel. Now it has been decided to increase the cut in excise duties until December 31st; let’s see the details of this choice.

Cutting of excise duties: the all-Italian novelty

As we were previously saying, the excise cut has been extended until December 31st. This is what the Meloni Government wanted, decided and finally established in the Aid Quater Law Decree. The advances included in the update note to the economic and financial document (Nadef) have been confirmed. It will be valid until the end of the current year precisely the provision launched by the Draghi executive in March, which had and still has the objective of reducing the disbursements to be paid by motorists.

The current one, which will expire in less than a week, provides for a reduction of about thirty cents for petrol and diesel and about ten for LPG. As long as methane remains, VAT will be reduced up to 5%. This is an important movement by the President Giorgia Meloni and her close collaborators: for this cut, a about one billion euros.

One billion euros, out of the nine intended for all the measures included in the new decree law, will go to limit the cost of fuel. A decree that also concerns the installment of bills for companies and the extension of tax credits for the purchase of electricity or gas. Still on the fuel front, the executive has also decided to increase attention to the performance of price lists. In a nutshell, the dynamics of prices sold at the pump will be constantly monitored, but also the components that determine them.

Adolfo Urso explained that in this phase marked by strong tensions on the energy markets “it is necessary to have an updated and specific picture of the activities for monitoring the prices of consumer goods and services”. This enhancement of the analyses, considering the important impact on business, household and consumer spending in general, will help to provide a useful input for future government decisions.
