NEW YORK – A gunman was shot dead by officers in Brooklyn after threatening to shoot a woman, according to law enforcement sources.

The shooting broke out after 22:00 on Thursday West 37th Street y Viale Nettuno in Coney Island, police said. Two officers were in the area when two women approached them screaming that a man on the block was shooting a gun.

Several officers arrived at the scene and found a man with a gun, according to New York City Police Chief Jeffrey Maddrey. Police sources said he threatened to shoot a woman.

Immediately after the agents got out of their vehicles, the suspect opened fire on them. Police responded, punching the suspect, but continued firing at the officers, Maddrey said. The gunman eventually stopped and officers were able to subdue and handcuff him as they gave him first aid for gunshot wounds, authorities said.

It is unclear how many times the suspect, who has not yet been identified, was shot but later died on the spot. It was also not clear how many shots he had fired.

Three officers were taken to nearby hospitals for tinnitus, police said.

The investigation is still ongoing.
