On November 9, the highly anticipated sequel to the popular God of War series: God of War Ragnarök was released. The successor to the previous GoW – which became Game of the Year 2018 – promises to be an epic game with many new challenges and stories, including a new special rival: Thor, the God of Thunder and Lightning. That’s why PlayStation started looking for a worthy first player; someone who had met Thor’s thunderbolt before and could still miraculously tell about it. It was a special meeting.
Thor, God of thunder and lightning
For a long time, stories have been told about the origin of thunder and lightning. The best known is that of Norse mythology, about Thor riding furiously above the clouds in his chariot pulled by two giant goats. With his famous and infamous ‘Mjölnir’ hammer he had control over lightning and thundered when he went to war.
Today is one of the few times when we humans still experience the power of the gods, when we see lightning bolts shooting across the sky and hear thundering applause. Many people are still afraid of thunderstorms. Not entirely unjustified, given that every year 1 in two million people are struck by lightning. And you are lucky if you survive.
The one who faced Thor before
PlayStation has found such a person. Julian Vriend was in the wrong place at an unfortunate moment and was struck by violent lightning. He survived, but was left with a traumatic memory. PlayStation asked him if he dared face his fears by facing Thor himself, The God of Thunder. And in the new God of War game Ragnarök. An avid gamer and fan of the series, Julian took up this challenge and became one of the first Dutch to play. In a dedicated PlayStation studio, he teamed up with Kratos and Atreus against Thor and we first saw Kratos’ Leviathan ax and Thor’s hammer Mjölnir collide in an epic battle. Would Julian face the incredible power of lightning again?
God of war Ragnarök
Santa Monica Studios faced a significant challenge following the overwhelming success of the previous game. But game makers are known to have structured the story like a game of chess. Which sparked hundreds of gaming theories and predictions on YouTube and other platforms. Hints, hidden details and game predictions provided maximum anticipation. The biggest hype was caused by Thor, which was revealed in an epic cliffhanger at the end of the previous game. The long-awaited Norse God has finally made his entrance with all the lightning, thunder and spectacle. But what his role will be in the new game was not clear to anyone. It is up to Kratos and Atreus to be discovered during the winter of Fimbul and the beginning of Ragnarök.
God of War Ragnarök is now available on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
