News from the NOS•
In the third quarter, the Netherlands registered a record number of tourists. They were 14.6 million. This is 15% more than the same period last year and 4% more than in 2019, the last year before the crown. Which appears from CBS data.
This applies to tourists from the Netherlands and abroad who have booked overnight stays in hotels, campsites, cottage parks and group accommodation. The third quarter includes the entire summer vacation.
Abroad doubled
Compared to last year, in the third quarter tourists from abroad were double, or 5.4 million. Domestic tourism actually fell by 8%, probably because many Dutch people stayed in their country last year due to the crown. Yet there were still 9.2 million people.
The increase in the number of Brits is astonishing. There were 464,000, almost 7 times more than in the third quarter of last year.
Germans (2.2 million) and Belgians (714,000) are still the most important countries of origin. Most of the intercontinental tourists come from the United States (524,000).
North Holland in the lead
Not all provinces benefit equally from the growth of tourism. North Holland receives the largest number of guests and in that province the increase of 57 percent was also by far the largest, while interest in Gelderland, Overijssel and Zealand fell by a few percentage points.
