Moscow – Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has asked the Russian army to withdraw from the city of Kherson in southern Ukraine. This is an area where Ukrainian forces have been advancing for weeks. Shoigu was reported to have instructed the Russian commander in Ukraine, Sergei Surovik, to “start withdrawing troops”.
It is reported that he was ordered to withdraw from Kherson and establish defenses on the left bank of the Dnipro River. Zurovikin informed Shoigu that some 115,000 people had been removed from the right bank of the Dnipro, which included the city of Kherson. The city of Kherson is the first urban center to be captured by Russia during its “special military operation” in Ukraine and the only regional capital under Russian control since the start of its offensive against Ukraine on 24 February.
