World footballer Robert Lewandowski was sent off for the first time since moving from FC Bayern Munich to FC Barcelona.
The outstanding Polish forward saw the yellow and red card in the Primera Division match at CA Osasuna’s home in Pamplona. However, even with a man down, the Catalans managed to win 2-1, which kept them at the top of the standings. Even the curse Gerard Piqué saw the red card in the last game of his professional career, even though he didn’t play at all.
For Lewandowski it was the first layoff in more than nine and a half years. He last saw the red card with Borussia Dortmund on 9 February 2013 in the Bundesliga match against Hamburger SV.
In Pamplona he received his first yellow card in the first half for a pinch of jersey. After his second yellow card, the 34-year-old had to leave the pitch in the 31st minute. Referee Gil Manzano noted in the match report that Lewandowski had expressed “disapproval of the referee’s decision” with the gesture. Lewandowski could get a three-match ban.
At half-time Piqué, who was only present as a substitute, verbally assaulted the referee and took the red card. According to the Spanish media, he said to Manzano, among other things: «Did you see what angle you gave us? You are the referee who fooled us the most. ”The 35-year-old then swore at the referee during his last tenure with FC Barcelona.
The Catalans, with goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, lead the Primera Divison standings with 37 points, five more than historic rivals Real Madrid, who host FC Cadiz on Thursday.
