Satellite images analyzed today by the Associated Press show the rapid growth of a cemetery in southern Ukraine in the months since Russian forces seized the port city of Mariupol.
Photos from Planet Labs PBC show the change in size of the cemetery in Stary Crimea, an occupied city northwest of Mariupol. Comparing the images of March 24, when Mariupol was already under attack by Russian forces, and a photograph of October 14, months after the fall of Mariupol, it is clear that the cemetery has expanded considerably towards the south.
An area of about 1.1 square kilometers at its southwestern end appears to have recently been excavated. Another recently excavated half square kilometer sector appears at the southeastern end. It is unknown how many people have been buried in Ancient Crimea since Russia invaded Ukraine.
