Trump regroups for the presidential election

News from the NOS

Donald Trump announced in a speech in Ohio that he will be making “a very big announcement” next week. It is widely expected that he will run for re-election in the presidential election.

In recent days he has called “very, very, very likely” that he will be involved again in the battle for the White House. “I’ll probably have to do it again, keep an eye on it.” Now he wants to make an announcement from his home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, next Tuesday. The presidential elections will be held in November 2024.

Midterm

Trump is in Ohio to campaign for the midterm, the mid-term elections for the Chamber of Deputies and part of the Senate. The Democrats now have a narrow majority in both Houses. Democrats will likely lose the House, even the battle for the Senate will hang on it.

Trump plays a pivotal role in the mid-term elections. Many of the Republican candidates have been proposed by him or have explicit support from him.

Much is at stake for President Biden. Should the Democrats lose power in Congress, Biden will have little leeway to get things done during the remainder of his term.

Biden is therefore actively campaigning and warning Americans that democracy is at stake.

Correspondent Lucas Waagmeester explains why the election is also a stress test for American democracy:
