JawaPos.com-Chief of Puskesmas Tugu Utara 3 Sub-district Koja Jakarta dr. Endang Sulistyani recalled that there are three specific clinical symptoms that the public should be aware of, especially for people with high risk factors for diabetes mellitus (DM).
There are three clinical characteristics or symptoms that are specific to this DM disease called 3P or three batches. It’s polyuria or a lot of urination, then polydipsia or drinking a lot, and polyphagia or eating a lot, ”Endang said in a virtual speech broadcast via the DKI Jakarta Health Office YouTube.
In addition, he explained that the symptoms of polyuria are marked when a person urinates a lot or urinates frequently. This, Endang added, is caused by the rise in blood sugar levels, so the kidneys try to get rid of the sugar and participate in drawing lots of fluids into the body.
” So that someone whose blood sugar levels go up is experiencing frequent urination or urination. Even in one day, five liters can be emitted when urinating, “he told her.
Also, symptoms of polydipsia or frequent thirst. This condition occurs because a lot of fluid is released during urination so that a person with diabetes feels excessive thirst and the need to drink also becomes greater.
Finally, the symptoms of polyphagia or eating a lot occur when the body experiences starvation of cells so that the body will try to insert many calories to cope with the starving cells. Therefore, someone who has high blood sugar levels will feel hungry or eat a lot.
These are symptoms specific to diabetes mellitus. There are also non-specific symptoms, such as weight loss due to unknown reasons, “How come I suddenly lost a lot of weight even though I eat a lot,” Endang said.
Additionally, other non-specific symptoms include feeling weak, itchy, sores that don’t heal or boils that come and go, vaginal discharge in women, and even impotence in men.
“But these symptoms can also manifest at an advanced time so that a person is sometimes not aware that they already have diabetes mellitus, there are also asymptomatic ones so it is too late to know that someone has diabetes mellitus,” he said. .
Endang recalled that diabetes, especially type two diabetes, is actually a risk for everyone. In general, there are risk factors that can actually be modified to reduce the risk of diabetes such as obesity, lack of physical activity, lack of a balanced nutritional diet, and hypertension.
While the risk factors that cannot be changed are age, heredity, the mother suffering from gestational diabetes and the birth of a baby weighing less than 2500 grams a finger or through a vein usually taken from the elbow.
“A person is considered to have DM when the blood sugar level is above 200 mg / dl accompanied by specific symptoms, as mentioned, there is polyphagia, polyuria, polydipsia,” he said.
