Avoid used cars with these engines ᐉ News from Fakti.bg – Auto

Soot on the valves and high oil consumption, and immediately after a mileage of 100,000 kilometers. Modern cars with such engines are not few, but there are also those that are particularly inadvisable. We will now stop your attention on four engines installed on old popular cars.

The period from 2002 to 2010 can be defined as a problematic period of engine construction, when many new engines, complex in design and with high thermal load, were launched on the market in the name of economy and ecology. However, most of these units proved unreliable.

Problems such as timing chain elongation, local overheating, cylinder cracks, piston wear and excessive oil consumption became typical problems of early turbo engines. The good news is that by 2015 all problematic units were updated repeatedly, while others were simply retired and replaced with new ones.

Thus the epidemic of faulty engines subsided. But millions of cars equipped with these engines continue to be sold in the secondary market. And many of them are quite popular. We show you five of these problematic motors with the caveat that with proper operation and maintenance, these bikes can last up to 300,000km.

Peugeot EP6

The EP6 engine (also known as N12B16A in the Mini ranking) is a joint idea of BMW and Peugeot. It was put into operation in 2006. This unit has outstanding performance, but also some problems. All modifications suffer from oil and coolant leaks, rapid wear of the tensioners and lengthening of the timing chain, as well as excessive oil consumption. The reputation of tizo engines also suffers from the unreliable thermostat, water and fuel pumps. The mileage of 200,000 km can only be reached after a series of repairs to the aforementioned units.

In addition to the 3008, the engine was also used in the Mini and BMW models, as well as in the Citroen C4 and Peugeot 308, but is more common in the two versions of the Peugeot 3008 crossovers: atmospheric (120hp) and supercharged (150 or 156hp) . The engine has been updated many times, but in 2013 it was still not at the required level. After all, engines produced after 2015 can be considered conditionally reliable.

VW 1.4 TSI

The EA111 family of supercharged TSI / TFSI engines was “born” in 2005. The 1.4 TSI engine has become one of the most popular in Europe, including in our country. The innovative solutions, unfortunately, were not supported by reliability. The most vulnerable link in the beginning was the distribution chain. It can stretch quickly or, due to a failed tensioner design, “jump” causing the valves to meet the pistons. Oil consumption, antifreeze leaks, bypass valve clogging, intolerance to poor quality fuels are all problems that characterize these engines.

An upgrade took place in 2010, during which the timing chain was abandoned in favor of a belt. Subsequently, the engine was further improved, but it did not become completely problem-free. In 2015 it was replaced by the new EA211 family. But even today there are hundreds of VW and Skoda on the market with 1.4 TSI in versions of 122, 125, 150 hp. waiting for new owners.

BMW 2.0 N47

The Bavarian company created in 2007 one of the worst turbodiesels: the 2.0 N47 series. This unit features many innovations and outstanding performance. But in combination with increased sensitivity to fuel quality, the risk of overheating and the guarantee of clogging of the sections with combustion products and wear. Rapid chain lengthening, fuel system failures, turbo and EGR problems, crankshaft wear, unhealed cylinder cracks and the need to disassemble the engine to replace the chain are the problems most common with this engine.

In defense of this bike, we can say that with perfect service and a quiet ride, the bike is capable of a mileage of 300,000km. But are BMWs bought for quiet driving? The engine was used on many BMW models, including the Toyota RAV4. Since 2015, the N47 series has been gradually replaced by the more reliable B47 series, which is not even ideal.

Opel 1.4 A14NET

The Chevrolet A14NET supercharged petrol engine – 1.4 (140 hp) – has been in production since 2009. It’s not bad in terms of resources, but to get long mileage, you will have to do a lot of repairs.

The device is noisy and if knocks, clicks and whistles occur, this indicates a malfunction of the phase regulator or the pump of the cooling system. The valve covers and crankshaft seals leak pretty soon, the crankcase ventilation system clogs up quickly, the turbine sometimes fails at low mileage. Piston wear problems are common in early versions. Honestly: with careful care and timely detection of the signs of the disease, and this bike can last 300 thousand km.
