‘This is what hell looks like to me’: the world’s largest cruise ship mocked

Guardian reporter Heide Stephens tweeted this week image of the megalomaniac ship. “I can’t stop looking,” she wrote. “This is what hell looks like to me.” Her son described them as “human lasagna”.

The ship is 365 meters long, has 2805 cabins and seven swimming pools on board. So there are a maximum of about 10,000 people on the ship: there is room for a maximum of 7600 passengers and 2350 crew members.

Candy Crush

Stephens has received thousands of comments from Twitter who mostly make fun of him. “It looks like a fake shot from a Pixar movie,” wrote one person. The ship also reminds some of the Candy Crush game, some compare to a collapsible storage box:

Out of stock

However, the tickets for the first sailing to the Caribbean would have sold wonderfully. In fact, the first trip is already sold out.

Icon of the Seas will be particularly attractive to American families with well-filled wallets, it is expected. They go to Florida and then go to Mexico and the Bahamas, among other places. Here’s what the ship will look like:

“Floating environmental disaster”

Buienradar meteorologist Reinier van den Berg thought it was fake when he saw the image. He calls it a “floating environmental disaster”. “Too crazy for words.” According to the meteorologist, it is a “disaster in the making” due to the emissions.

How much does the ship pollute? Bart Verheggen, climate specialist at RTL Nieuws, says the ship I will not sail on fuel oil but to LNG. “In principle, that liquefied natural gas is cleaner than fuel oil. But a huge mass has to be moved through the water. Per person per kilometer, it costs a lot of energy. It’s an inefficient means of transportation.”

It is also debatable whether LNG is really much better because methane sludge can leak, a heavy greenhouse gas. In addition, there is a shortage of gas, including LNG. “You may wonder if it should go to such a large luxury horse, while homes can also be heated with it.”
