Every day we use our memory intensely all day: what time was that appointment again? Did we close the fridge at home this morning? Poor memory can complicate our daily activities, while a good memory can make our life easier, for example when we remember lists or learn a new language. During education there are all kinds of things that can affect the development of our memory, but performance can change in adulthood as well. How does the brain cope with this at the neuronal level? Can we take action to improve our memory? And how come we don’t have memories from before the age of four?
On Tuesday 8 November, memory experts Freyja Ólafsdóttir and Boris Konrad of Radboud University will introduce us, in English, to the wonders of memory. Ólafsdóttir takes a fundamental approach in her research and implements all kinds of techniques to study the activity of individual neurons and their insertion into neuronal networks. For example, she studies the development of spatial and episodic memory in rodents. Konrad, on the other hand, studies the neuronal principles behind memory enhancement in humans and the benefits of different memory strategies. Furthermore, he studies the effects of modern technology on our brains. Inspirational music provided by Punch! will make this evening even more memorable!
